Flashcards

Ethylene
Ethylene is known for its role in fruit ripening and the dropping of leaves and fruit. It also promotes senescence and abscission.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid plays a role in plant resistance to pathogens and is involved in the establishment of systemic acquired resistance.
Gibberellins
Gibberellins promote stem and leaf growth by stimulating cell division and elongation. They also break seed dormancy and induce flowering in some plants.
Cytokinins
Cytokinins promote cell division and growth, delay the aging of plant tissues, and can work with auxins to stimulate differentiation.
Brassinosteroids
Brassinosteroids are essential for plant growth and development, promoting cell expansion, cell division, and differentiation, similar to auxins and gibberellins.
Strigolactones
Strigolactones inhibit shoot branching and help stimulate the association of roots with mycorrhizal fungi.
Auxins
Auxins stimulate stem elongation, root growth, and differentiation. They also play a role in phototropism and gravitropism.
Jasmonates
Involved in plant responses to stress and wounding, jasmonates also regulate growth and reproductive processes.
Abscisic Acid (ABA)
Abscisic acid functions mainly to inhibit growth, promote dormancy and enable plants to withstand stress conditions like drought.
Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA)
IAA is the principal auxin in plants and is involved in cell elongation, root formation, and the coordination of many growth and behavioral processes.
Triacontanol
Triacontanol is a natural fatty alcohol that has been shown to enhance photosynthesis, increase plant growth, and improve crop yields.
Florigen
Florigen is a hypothetical hormone-like molecule that promotes flowering in plants in response to photoperiod.
Zeatin
A type of cytokinin that promotes cell division and influences other processes like nutrient mobilization.
Gibberellic Acid
One of the most common gibberellins that stimulate plant growth and seed germination by enhancing the breakdown of starches in seeds.
1-Aminocyclopropane-1-Carboxylic Acid (ACC)
ACC is not a phytohormone itself but a direct precursor of ethylene, an important phytohormone involved in fruit ripening and the response to stress.
