Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)
A bacterium that produces proteins harmful to certain insects. It's used to control caterpillar larvae, beetles, and flies in organic and traditional farming.
Trichoderma
A genus of fungi that improves nutrient uptake and provides resistance to plant pathogens. They are used as seed treatments and soil amendments.
Beauveria bassiana
A fungus that acts as an insect pathogen. It's used for the control of various insect pests such as whiteflies and termites.
Spinosad
An insecticide derived from the fermentation of soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It's used against a wide array of insects, including caterpillars, leaf miners, and thrips.
Azadirachtin
The active ingredient in neem oil, extracted from the seeds of the neem tree. It acts as a growth regulator and repellent for many insect pests.
Baculovirus
A type of virus that specifically infects and kills insects. It's used as a biological control agent against certain insect pests.
Pseudomonas fluorescens
A bacterium used as a soil inoculant that suppresses soil-borne diseases and promotes plant growth.
Pyrethrins
A mixture of organic compounds from the chrysanthemum flower with insecticidal properties. It's quickly degraded by light and not persistent in the environment.
Milky Spore
The bacterium Paenibacillus popilliae used to control Japanese beetle grubs in lawns and golf courses.
Metarhizium anisopliae
A fungus that infects and kills a variety of insects, including beetles, ticks, and mosquitoes.
NPV (Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus)
A group of viruses that infect and kill insects, particularly used against caterpillars and larvae of moths and butterflies.
Bacillus subtilis
A bacterium that colonizes plant roots, stimulates plant growth, and suppresses root diseases.
Nematodes
Microscopic worms that are natural parasites to garden pests, particularly used against soil-dwelling larvae and grubs.
Chromobacterium subtsugae
A bacterium used to control many types of pests including whiteflies, aphids, and thrips, and is used as a foliar spray or in irrigation water.
Granulosis Virus
A type of virus used to control certain insects, especially effective against codling moth larvae in apple and pear orchards.
