Reporter Genes
Genes that are attached to a regulatory sequence of interest and whose expression is used to monitor the activity of that sequence.
Terminator Sequence
A sequence of DNA that signals the end of gene transcription.
Transgene
A gene introduced into a plant that originates from a different species or is artificially constructed.
Regeneration
In plant biotechnology, the process by which a plant grows from a single cell or tissue piece back into a full plant.
Ti Plasmid
A tumor-inducing plasmid found in Agrobacterium tumefaciens, used as a vector for genetic engineering in plants.
Somatic Embryogenesis
A form of plant tissue culture where somatic (non-reproductive) cells are induced to develop into embryos that can then grow into plants.
Selectable Marker Genes
Genes that are inserted into plants to help identify cells that have been successfully transformed with new genetic material.
Marker-Assisted Selection
A method where markers linked to certain genes of interest are used to select plants that have desired traits, enhancing breeding programs.
CRISPR-Cas9
A genome editing tool that allows for the precise modification of DNA within organisms.
Vector
A carrier DNA molecule that can transport foreign genetic material into another cell, where it can be replicated and/or expressed.
Plant Proprietary Protection
The intellectual property rights specifically tailored to protect plant varieties and plant breeders' innovations.
Gene Silencing
A natural or engineered process where the expression of a specific gene is suppressed.
Bioinformatics
The use of computational tools to analyze and interpret biological data, especially genetic sequences.
Agrobacterium tumefaciens
A bacterium used as a tool for plant transformation; utilizes a naturally occurring plasmid to insert genetic material into plant cells.
Floral Dip
A transformation technique where flowering plants are dipped into a solution containing Agrobacterium to transfer new genetic material without tissue culture.
Tissue Culture
The technique of growing plants cells or tissues in an artificial medium separate from the parent organism.
Genetic Transformation
The process of introducing new DNA into a plant cell to change its characteristics.
Promoter
A DNA sequence that regulates the expression of a gene by providing a binding site for RNA polymerase.
Gene Gun Method (Biolistics)
A physical method of plant transformation where DNA is literally shot into plant cells using microscopic particles.
RNA Interference (RNAi)
A biological process where RNA molecules inhibit gene expression by neutralizing targeted mRNA molecules.
