Response to NSAIDs
An improvement in symptoms with the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is indicative of inflammatory rather than mechanical back pain in spondyloarthritis.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Gastrointestinal conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are associated with spondyloarthritis.
Uveitis
An inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which can be associated with spondyloarthritis, especially ankylosing spondylitis.
Oligoarthritis
Inflammation in few joints (typically 4 or fewer), frequently seen in the early stages of spondyloarthritis.
Morning Stiffness
Stiffness in the back or joints that lasts for more than 30 minutes after awakening, frequently seen in spondyloarthritis.
Nail Changes
Alterations in the appearance of nails such as pitting, ridging or thickening, observed in psoriatic arthritis.
Elevated C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
Increased levels of CRP can indicate systemic inflammation and is seen in some patients with spondyloarthritis.
Lower Back Pain
Chronic pain and stiffness in the lower back, buttocks, and hips that occurs in ankylosing spondylitis and other forms of spondyloarthritis.
Asymmetric Joint Involvement
Uneven distribution of inflammation in joints, often seen in psoriatic arthritis and other types of spondyloarthritis.
Genital Ulceration
The occurrence of painful sores in the genital region can be a feature of reactive arthritis, a subtype of spondyloarthritis.
Fatigue
Persistent tiredness that is not relieved by rest, often accompanying the systemic inflammation in spondyloarthritis.
Sacroiliitis
Inflammation of one or both of the sacroiliac joints, found in ankylosing spondylitis and other spondyloarthritis.
Hla-B27 Positivity
A genetic marker associated with increased risk for various types of spondyloarthritis, including ankylosing spondylitis.
Limited Spinal Mobility
Decreased range of motion in the spine due to inflammation and, eventually, fusion of the vertebrae in ankylosing spondylitis.
Heel Pain
Pain at the back of the heel, often due to enthesitis at the Achilles tendon insertion, associated with spondyloarthritis.
Psoriasis
A skin condition producing red patches with silvery scales, commonly associated with psoriatic arthritis, a subset of spondyloarthritis.
Enthesitis
Inflammation of entheses, the sites where ligaments or tendons insert into the bone, commonly seen in spondyloarthritis.
Dactylitis
Swelling of an entire digit (finger or toe), giving it a sausage-like appearance, often found in psoriatic arthritis, a type of spondyloarthritis.
Juvenile Onset
Onset of spondyloarthritis symptoms before age 16, observed in juvenile spondyloarthritis.
Acute Anterior Uveitis
A rapid onset of uveitis characterized by eye redness, photophobia, and pain, commonly seen in HLA-B27-associated spondyloarthritis.
