Forum Non Conveniens
A doctrine that allows a court to dismiss a case when another court or forum is substantially more appropriate for the parties to resolve their dispute.
Long-Arm Statute
A state law that permits a state's courts to reach beyond the state's boundaries for jurisdiction over nonresident defendants based on certain conduct.
General Jurisdiction
A court's inherent authority to hear any case brought before it, regardless of where the parties are from or where a cause of action occurred, typically because the defendant has substantial or systematic and continuous contacts with the forum.
In Rem Jurisdiction
Jurisdiction based on the presence of property within the state, regardless of whether the property owner is physically present in the state or has other contacts with the state.
