Voir Dire
The process by which judges and attorneys select a jury from among those eligible to serve, by questioning them to determine knowledge and biases.
Grand Jury
A type of jury that determines whether there is enough evidence for a trial. Typically used in criminal cases to decide on the issuance of indictments.
Petit Jury
A trial jury typically made up of 6 to 12 members who are tasked with determining the facts of a case and issuing a verdict based on evidence presented.
Jury Instructions
Directions given by the judge to the jury concerning the law applicable to the facts of the case on trial.
Sequestered Jury
A jury that is isolated from the public during the course of a trial and throughout the deliberation process to prevent exposure to outside influences.
Jury Nullification
When a jury returns a verdict of 'Not Guilty' despite believing the defendant is guilty, as an act of disagreement with the law or its application.
Unanimous Verdict
A jury verdict where all jurors agree on the decision. Required in criminal trials in federal courts and many state courts.
