Accrual
The moment when the statute of limitations begins to run. It is usually the time when the injury occurred or was discovered, which triggers the start of the limitations period.
Discovery Rule
A legal principle that delays the start of the statute of limitations period until the injury or wrongdoing is discovered, or could reasonably have been discovered.
Tolling
A legal doctrine that allows for the pausing or delaying of the statute of limitations period under certain circumstances, such as the plaintiff being a minor, having an incapacitating illness, or the defendant being absent from the state or in hiding.
Statute of Limitations
A law that sets the maximum time that parties involved in a dispute have to initiate legal proceedings from the date of the alleged offense.
Repose Statute
A statute of repose limits the time within which an action may be brought and is not subject to extension or tolling like a statute of limitations. It provides a final deadline that cannot be extended.
