Ethical Principles in Psychology

Flashcards
0/5
Autonomy
The principle of autonomy involves treating individuals with respect and allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their own treatment. For instance, a psychologist must obtain informed consent before initiating therapy or assessment.
Beneficence and Nonmaleficence
These twin principles dictate that psychologists should strive to benefit those with whom they work while taking care to do no harm. For example, a clinician must carefully consider the potential risks of a treatment plan against its benefits.
Justice
The principle of justice refers to the ethical obligation to treat individuals fairly and equitably. Clinically, this might involve ensuring that all clients have equal access to psychological services regardless of their background or financial status.
Fidelity and Responsibility
This principle focuses on maintaining trust by being professional, accurate, and adhering to promises. Clinical psychologists demonstrate this by managing boundaries and not exploiting clients, and by taking responsibility for their professional behaviour.
Integrity
Integrity in psychology underscores the importance of honesty, accuracy, and truthfulness. Clinicians apply this principle by avoiding deceitful practices, and by correcting any misinformation they may inadvertently provide to clients.
