Lobes of the Brain

Flashcards
0/8
Frontal lobe
Involved in complex cognitive functions such as decision making, problem-solving, control of purposeful behaviors, consciousness, and emotions.
Limbic lobe
Not traditionally classified as a lobe, but involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. The limbic system includes parts of the frontal and temporal lobes.
Insular lobe
Plays a role in diverse functions usually related to emotion and the perception of the body's internal states (interoception). Also involved in functions such as homeostasis, perception, motor control, self-awareness, cognitive functioning, and interpersonal experience.
Brainstem
Also not a lobe, but crucial for regulatory functions such as heart rate, breathing, sleeping, and eating.
Parietal lobe
Processes sensory information it receives from the outside world, mainly relating to spatial sense and navigation (proprioception), the main sensory receptive area for the sense of touch.
Occipital lobe
Highly responsible for visual processing, including visuospatial processing, distance, and depth perception, color determination, object and face recognition, and memory formation.
Temporal lobe
Involved in the processing of auditory information and is also important for the processing of semantics in both speech and vision. The temporal lobe contains the hippocampus and is therefore involved in the formation of explicit long-term memory.
Cerebellum
Though not a lobe, it is a distinct structure associated with voluntary movements, such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity. It's also important for learning motor behaviors.
