Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Comprises all the nerves that lie outside the central nervous system. Provides the link between the CNS and the rest of the body.
Somatic Nervous System
Controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles and mediates the reception of sensory information.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. It processes information and coordinates activity throughout the body.
Sympathetic Nervous System
Part of the ANS, it prepares the body for 'fight-or-flight' response during stressful situations.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Controls involuntary body functions like heartbeat, digestion, and breathing. Subdivided into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Part of the ANS, it conserves energy by slowing down the heart rate and increasing intestinal and gland activity during restful periods.
