Dewatering Techniques for Construction

Flashcards
0/8
Wellpoints
Used to lower groundwater levels to stabilize the soil; consists of a network of small-diameter pipes.
Deep Wells
Similar to wellpoints but used for larger excavations and greater depths; utilizes submersible pumps.
Eductor Wells
Use high-pressure water jets for dewatering, create a flow of groundwater towards the well for extraction.
Open Sump Pumping
Simplest method, using ditches and sumps within the excavation to collect and pump out water.
Vacuum Dewatering
Applies a vacuum to the soil to enhance water removal, often in conjunction with other systems like wellpoints.
Horizontal Wells
Laid horizontally, these collect water in a lateral direction; more suited to certain site conditions.
Electro-osmosis
(For fine-grained soils) A technique utilizing electric current to move water to electrodes where it can be pumped out.
Freezing Method
Use of refrigeration to freeze the ground, creates a temporary impermeable barrier to water flow.
