Flashcards

Terracing
Terracing is the creation of flat areas on a hillside that provide a series of steps to reduce erosion and surface runoff, commonly applied in agriculture and landscape design.
Contour Plowing
Contour plowing is the farming practice of plowing across a slope following its elevation contour lines. The furrows formed act as small dams to reduce soil erosion caused by water runoff.
Erosion Control Blankets
Erosion control blankets are biodegradable materials made of straw, coconut fiber, or similar materials that protect soil from erosion by water and wind and facilitate plant growth, often used on embankments and slopes.
Geotextiles
Geotextiles are permeable fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain. Typically used in roadway construction and erosion control projects.
Gabions
Gabions are wirework containers filled with rock, broken concrete, or other material, used in civil engineering, road building, and military applications for erosion control.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are rigid walls used for supporting soil laterally so that it can be retained at different levels on the two sides. Commonly used in landscape architecture and civil engineering.
Grassed Waterways
Grassed waterways are natural or constructed channels that are shaped or graded to required dimensions and established with suitable vegetation for the stable conveyance of runoff; they are often used in agricultural lands.
Riprap
Riprap consists of large stones or broken concrete placed along shorelines, streambeds, bridge foundations, and other structures to prevent erosion due to water flow.
