Ultimate Bearing Capacity (UBC)
The maximum pressure that can be applied to the soil from the foundation below which the soil does not fail in shear is known as Ultimate Bearing Capacity. It is significant in determining safe foundation design.
Terzaghi's Bearing Capacity Theory
Terzaghi's theory provides formulas to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations based on soil properties and footing dimensions and assumes conditions of general shear failure for soils.
Factor of Safety (FoS)
The Factor of Safety is a design criteria that provides a margin against failure under estimated loads. It is the ratio of Ultimate Bearing Capacity to Safe Bearing Capacity.
Bearing Capacity Factor (Nc, Nq, Nγ)
These are dimensionless coefficients used in the bearing capacity equation
Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC)
Safe Bearing Capacity is the maximum pressure that can be safely applied on the soil considering a factor of safety with respect to the Ultimate Bearing Capacity.
Allowable Bearing Pressure (ABP)
Allowable Bearing Pressure is the pressure on the soil which is safe for carrying the anticipated loads without leading to shear failure or settlement beyond acceptable limits.
Net Ultimate Bearing Capacity (NUBC)
The net pressure which can be applied to the soil considering the risk of shear failure after subtracting the initial overburden pressure is termed as Net Ultimate Bearing Capacity.
Settlement of Foundation
The downward movement of the foundation due to the loads placed on the soil, which can affect the structural integrity of the construction. Controlling settlement is a key part of foundation design.
