Epiglottis
A flap made of elastic cartilage tissue covered with a mucous membrane, attached to the entrance of the larynx. It prevents food and drink from entering the windpipe during swallowing.
Anus
The opening at the end of the digestive tract where feces exit the body. It is surrounded by muscles that control defecation.
Liver
A vital organ that processes nutrients absorbed from the small intestine, detoxifies harmful chemicals, and produces bile to help digest fats.
Stomach
A sac-like organ that secretes acid and enzymes to digest food. It churns food into a semi-liquid substance called chyme.
Mesentery
A fold of membrane that attaches the intestine to the abdominal wall and holds it in place. It also contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels.
Gallbladder
A small organ that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver, releasing it into the small intestine to aid in the digestion of fats.
Pancreas
This gland produces enzymes that break down sugars, fats, and starches. It also secretes insulin and glucagon to regulate blood sugar levels.
Cecum
The first part of the large intestine into which the ileum of the small intestine empties. It is also where the appendix is attached.
Pylorus
The opening from the stomach into the duodenum. It is regulated by a sphincter that controls the passage of chyme.
Salivary Glands
Glands in the mouth that produce saliva, which begins the digestive process by lubricating and breaking down carbohydrates with amylase enzyme.
Rectum
The final section of the large intestine, which stores feces before they are excreted through the anus.
Esophagus
A muscular tube that conveys food from the throat to the stomach using waves of muscle contractions called peristalsis.
Large Intestine
Also known as the colon, it absorbs water from waste, creating stool. It includes the cecum, colon, rectum, and anus.
Appendix
A small tube connected to the large intestine, which is considered a vestigial structure in humans. Its exact function is still a matter of research.
Small Intestine
A long, coiled tube where most digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs. It is divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
