Liver Function Tests
8
Flashcards
0/8
Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)
Purpose: To measure the level of LDH, an enzyme that can indicate tissue damage. Interpretation: High LDH levels can indicate liver damage, along with damage to other organs like the heart or kidneys.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Purpose: To measure the level of ALP, an enzyme in the liver, bile ducts, and bone. Interpretation: High levels can indicate bile duct obstruction, liver disease, or bone disorders.
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)
Purpose: To measure the level of ALT in the blood, an enzyme found in the liver. Interpretation: High levels may indicate liver damage or disease.
Gamma-glutamyl Transferase (GGT)
Purpose: To measure the GGT level in blood to assess liver and bile duct function. Interpretation: Elevated GGT can suggest cholestasis, liver disease, or alcohol abuse.
Bilirubin
Purpose: To measure both direct and indirect bilirubin to assess liver function and detect jaundice. Interpretation: High levels can indicate liver dysfunction or hemolysis.
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
Purpose: To measure the level of AST in the blood, an enzyme found in multiple tissues including the liver. Interpretation: High levels may suggest liver damage but are not specific to the liver as AST is also present in other organs.
Albumin
Purpose: To measure the level of albumin, the main protein made by the liver. Interpretation: Low levels can indicate liver disease or other medical conditions like malnutrition or kidney disease.
Prothrombin Time (PT)
Purpose: To measure the time it takes for blood to clot. Interpretation: Prolonged PT can indicate liver damage or the presence of blood disorders, and it’s used to monitor blood-thinning medications.
