Diabetic Retinopathy
A diabetes complication that affects the eyes, caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). Symptoms include floaters, blurriness, dark areas of vision, and difficulty perceiving colors.
Dry Eye Syndrome
A condition where a person doesn't have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Common symptoms include scratchy or burning sensations, mucus around or in the eye, and light sensitivity.
Uveitis
Inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (uvea). Symptoms can include red eyes, pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and dark, floating spots in the vision.
Cataracts
A clouding of the lens in the eye, leading to a decrease in vision. Common symptoms include blurry vision, difficulty with glare, and fading colors.
Blepharitis
Inflammation of the eyelids, usually where eyelashes grow, often due to a bacterial infection or other skin conditions. Symptoms include red, swollen, itchy eyelids and formation of dandruff-like scales on eyelashes.
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
A condition that results in blurred or no vision in the center of the visual field. Early symptoms may include shadowy areas in central vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted vision.
Corneal Ulcer
An open sore on the cornea, often due to infection. Symptoms include severe pain, reduced vision, eye redness, and sometimes a white patch on the cornea.
Glaucoma
A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often associated with high eye pressure. Symptoms can include patchy blind spots, tunnel vision in advanced stages, and sometimes eye pain.
Strabismus
A condition in which the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. Symptoms include misalignment of the eyes, double vision, and difficulty with depth perception.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
An inflammation or infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid. Symptoms can include redness, itching, tearing, and a thick yellow discharge that crusts over the eyelashes.
Retinal Detachment
Occurs when the retina separates from its attachements to the underlying tissue. Symptoms include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, and losing a field of vision like a curtain coming down over the eye.
Keratoconus
A progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This can cause distorted vision, increased sensitivity to light and glare, and an impact on night vision.
Refractive Errors
Vision issues resulting from the shape of the eye preventing light from focusing on the retina accurately. Types include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Symptoms can be blurry vision at certain distances, squinting, eye strain, and headaches.
Stye
A painful, pimple-like bump that occurs on the edge of the eyelid due to a bacterial infection of an oil gland. Symptoms include a red, swollen, painfully tender bump at the eyelid margin.
Optic Neuritis
Inflammation of the optic nerve that can cause sudden blindness or reduced vision and pain with eye movement. Often associated with diseases like multiple sclerosis. Other symptoms include visual field loss, loss of color vision, and flashing lights upon movement.
