Retinitis Pigmentosa
Description: A group of inherited disorders that cause progressive peripheral vision loss. Symptoms: Decreased night vision, loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision. Possible Treatments: Vitamin A palmitate, retinal implants, gene therapy.
Macular Hole
Description: A small break in the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Symptoms: Blurry and distorted vision, difficulty reading. Possible Treatments: Vitrectomy, pneumatic vitreolysis, face-down positioning.
Epiretinal Membrane
Description: A condition where a thin layer of tissue grows on the macula, affecting central vision. Symptoms: Vision blurring and distortion, difficulty seeing fine details, double vision in one eye. Possible Treatments: Watchful waiting, vitrectomy to remove the membrane.
Retinal Vasculitis
Description: An inflammatory disease affecting the vascular system of the retina, which can result in severe vision loss. Symptoms: Floaters, blurred vision, vision loss. Possible Treatments: Corticosteroids, immunosuppressive therapy, biological agents.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Description: Damage to the retinal blood vessels due to high blood sugar levels in diabetes. Symptoms: Spots or dark strings floating in vision, blurred vision, fluctuating vision. Possible Treatments: Strict blood sugar control, laser treatment, vitrectomy surgery.
Central Serous Retinopathy
Description: A condition where fluid accumulates under the retina causing a central serous detachment. Symptoms: Distorted and blurred central vision, reduced color vision. Possible Treatments: Often self-limiting, laser therapy, photodynamic therapy.
Macular Degeneration
Description: A common condition in older adults that leads to loss of vision in the center of the visual field. Symptoms: Blurry vision, dark areas in vision, and difficulty recognizing faces. Possible Treatments: Medication injections, laser therapy, and vitamins.
Retinoblastoma
Description: A rare type of eye cancer that begins in the retina, usually in children. Symptoms: White color in the center circle of the eye (pupil), eye redness, vision problems. Possible Treatments: Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, enucleation.
Cone-Rod Dystrophy
Description: A group of inherited eye disorders caused by the deterioration of cone and rod cells in the retina. Symptoms: Loss of visual acuity, abnormal color vision, sensitivity to light. Possible Treatments: Low vision aids, protective eyewear, gene therapy research.
Retinal Artery Occlusion
Description: An interruption of the blood supply to the retina due to an artery blockage. Symptoms: Sudden, painless vision loss. Possible Treatments: Ocular massage, anterior chamber paracentesis, hyperbaric oxygen.
Choroidal Neovascularization
Description: The growth of new blood vessels in the choroid layer of the eye that can leak and affect vision. Symptoms: Visual distortion, central vision loss, dark spots in vision. Possible Treatments: Anti-VEGF therapy, laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy.
Retinal Detachment
Description: When the retina separates from the tissue around it. Symptoms: Flashes of light, seeing lots of new floaters, a shadow over part of your field of vision. Possible Treatments: Pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling, vitrectomy.
Retinal Vein Occlusion
Description: A blockage of the small veins that carry blood away from the retina. Symptoms: Sudden vision loss or blurring, dark spots or lines (floaters). Possible Treatments: Anti-VEGF injections, laser therapy, corticosteroid injections.
Retinal Migraine
Description: A rare type of migraine that causes temporary, repeatable visual disturbances or blindness in one eye. Symptoms: Flashes of light, blind spots, temporary vision loss in one eye. Possible Treatments: Avoid migraine triggers, medications for migraines, stress management.
Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
Description: A mitochondrial genetic disorder that causes loss of central vision. Symptoms: Painless visual loss in one eye followed by the other, decreased color vision. Possible Treatments: Idebenone (a kind of Coenzyme Q10), supportive therapy, low vision aids.
