Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)
A condition where the hip joint has not formed normally. Symptoms include leg length discrepancy and limited movement. Treatment includes harnesses, bracing, or surgery.
Genu Valgum (Knock-Knees)
Legs are angled inward so that the knees touch. It's normal in children but if persistent, bracing or osteotomy might be required.
Osgood-Schlatter Disease
A condition causing pain and swelling at the tibial tuberosity, often seen in adolescents experiencing growth spurts. Treatment includes rest, ice, pain relief, and stretching exercises.
Adolescent Anterior Knee Pain
Pain is located at the front of the knee, often seen in teens. Treatment includes physical therapy, activity modification, and pain management techniques.
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
An autoimmune disorder causing chronic joint inflammation. Symptoms include joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in the morning. Treatment typically involves medication and physical therapy.
Sever's Disease
A condition causing heel pain in growing children, related to inflammation of the growth plate. Treatment includes rest, ice, and exercises to stretch and strengthen the surrounding muscles.
Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children, leading to hip pain and limping. Treatments include rest, physical therapy, and possibly surgery to improve hip joint function.
Spondylolysis
A defect or stress fracture in the pars interarticularis of the vertebra. Symptoms can include lower back pain. Non-surgical treatment involves rest and physical therapy; surgery is rare and for persistent cases.
Pectus Excavatum
A chest wall condition where the breastbone is sunken into the chest. Symptoms may include respiratory issues. Treatment can be surgical or non-surgical such as vacuum bell therapy.
Congenital Vertical Talus
A rare foot deformity where the talus bone is positioned incorrectly. It causes a rigid flatfoot. Treatment often involves surgery to correct the bone alignment.
Accessory Navicular Syndrome
The presence of an extra bone or piece of cartilage in the foot can cause pain and arch strain, especially during activity. Treatment may include rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medication, orthotics, or surgery.
Clubfoot
A congenital deformity characterized by a twisted foot. Treatment involves casting or surgery to correct the foot's position.
Osteochondritis Dissecans
A joint condition in which bone underneath the cartilage of a joint dies due to lack of blood flow. Symptoms include joint pain and stiffness. Treatment can be conservative or require surgery.
Tarsal Coalition
A congenital condition with an abnormal connection between two or more tarsal bones in the foot, leading to limited movement and pain. Treatment can range from orthotic support to surgical intervention.
Fractures in Children
Broken bones. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and inability to use the limb. Treatment usually involves casting, but some fractures may require surgery.
Scoliosis
A lateral curvature of the spine. Symptoms include uneven shoulders, waist, or hips. Treatment strategies range from observation to bracing to surgical correction, depending on severity.
Genu Varum (Bowlegs)
A condition characterized by outward bowing of the legs from knee downwards. It's normal in toddlers but can be treated with bracing or surgery if persistent beyond 3 years of age.
Juvenile Osteochondrosis of the Foot
A group of conditions affecting the growth areas of children's feet. Symptoms and treatment vary depending on the specific condition, such as Sever's disease or Freiberg's disease.
Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE)
A condition where the femoral head slips off the neck at the growth plate, typically during preadolescence. Symptoms include limping and hip/knee pain. Treatment usually involves surgical pinning.
Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
The soles of the feet have little to no arch, which might cause pain or discomfort. Treatment includes orthotic inserts and physical therapy to strengthen foot muscles.
Nursemaid's Elbow
Subluxation of the radial head, often occurring when a young child's arm is pulled. Symptoms include arm pain and refusal to use the affected arm. Treatment is usually a gentle reduction maneuver by a healthcare professional.
Congenital Muscular Torticollis
A condition where an infant's head is tilted to one side due to a shortened neck muscle. Treatment includes stretching and physical therapy.
Metatarsus Adductus
A foot deformity where the front half of the foot is turned inward. Mild cases may resolve spontaneously; severe cases might need casting or bracing.
Juvenile Hallux Valgus (Bunion)
A condition leading to a bony bump at the base of the big toe, which may cause the toe to turn towards the others. Treatment can involve conservative methods like padding to surgery in severe cases.
Apophysitis
An overuse injury affecting the growth plates in children and adolescents. Common sites include the knee, heel, and hip. Treatment involves rest, ice, pain relief, and physical therapy.
