Semantic Memory
A type of long-term memory involving the capacity to recall words, concepts, or numbers, which is essential for the use and understanding of language.
Storage
The retention of encoded information over time. It is the second memory stage where data is maintained for later use, and involves maintaining information over periods of time. It includes short-term, long-term, and sensory memory.
Short-term Memory
A capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. Reflects the brain's brief storage of information.
Episodic Memory
A type of long-term memory that involves the recollection of specific events, situations, and experiences.
Procedural Memory
A type of long-term memory that pertains to the specific procedures involved in tasks such as walking, talking, or riding a bike. It's our memory of how to do things.
Encoding
The process of converting sensations into memories. Encoding allows the perceived item of interest to be converted into a construct that can be stored within the brain and recalled later from short-term or long-term memory.
Long-term Memory
The continuous storage of information which is not immediately in consciousness. It has a practically infinite storage capacity and can store information indefinitely.
Consolidation
A process by which short-term memories are transformed into long-term memories. It is believed to occur mainly during sleep.
Retrieval
The ability to access and bring into consciousness information from memory storage. This process involves locating and taking out the stored information from memory.
Working Memory
A cognitive system that is responsible for temporarily holding information available for processing. Important for reasoning, guidance of decision-making, and behavior.
