Handball
A method of passing the ball by holding it with one hand and hitting it with the other.
Mark
Catching the ball directly from a kick of 15 meters or more without it touching the ground or being touched by another player.
Goal
Scoring 6 points by kicking the ball between the two taller goal posts without it being touched.
Behind
Scoring 1 point when the ball passes between a goal post and a behind post, or is touched before passing between the goal posts.
Bounce
A technique where a player bounces the ball on the ground while running.
Specky
A term for a spectacular mark, often involving jumping on the back of another player to catch the ball
Tackle
Physically restraining an opposition player who has possession of the ball, potentially resulting in a free kick.
Ruckman
A tall player responsible for contesting ball-ups and boundary throw-ins.
Torpedo Punt
A type of kick that spins the ball about its long axis, allowing for greater distance.
Snap
A quick, improvised kick, typically over the shoulder, used to score or pass the ball in a tight situation.
Wing
A position on the field typically running along the sides, primarily responsible for linking the defense to the offense.
Centre Square
The middle area of the ground from which the ball is bounced at the start of each quarter and after every goal.
Interchange
The area where players can be substituted on and off the field.
Holding the Ball
A violation called when a player in possession of the ball is tackled and does not immediately dispose of the ball legally.
Shepherding
Using the body to block or shield an opponent to protect a teammate in possession of the ball or to clear a path.
Clanger
A mistake or bad play, often resulting in a turnover.
Wingman
The player who operates on the wing, often contributing to both offensive and defensive plays.
Forward Pocket
Area of the ground near the scoring zone on each side, which is often where the smaller, quicker forwards play.
Full Forward
The main target inside the attacking 50-meter arc, typically responsible for scoring goals.
Half Forward
A less central area in the forward line, where players contribute to attacks and score from slightly further out.
Fullback
Key defensive position at the back of the field responsible for stopping the opposing full forward.
Centre Half Forward
A forward position that is central to attacking plays, often a key target for midfielders delivering the ball into the forward line.
Centre Half Back
A key defensive position responsible for repelling attacks and starting counter-plays.
Pocket Rocket
A small, fast player who plays in the forward pocket, known for agility and ability to score.
Blood Rule
A rule that requires a player to leave the field if they are bleeding, until the bleeding is stopped or controlled.
