Tripping
Occurs when a player uses their stick, knee, foot, arm, hand or elbow to cause an opponent to trip or fall.
High-sticking
When a player hits an opponent with a stick held above the shoulders. Can result in minor or major penalties depending on whether it causes injury.
Slashing
Occurs when a player swings their stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Intent to injure can lead to a major penalty.
Hooking
A player uses their stick to impede the movement of an opponent by 'hooking' any part of their body or equipment.
Interference
Penalized when a player impedes or obstructs an opponent who does not have the puck, or deliberately knocks a stick out of an opponent's hand.
Cross-checking
When a player uses the shaft of the stick between the hands to forcefully check an opponent.
Boarding
A penalty for body checking an opponent into the boards with excessive force.
Elbowing
Penalized when a player uses their elbow to hit an opponent.
Holding
Occurs when a player holds an opponent with their hands, arms, or stick. Can lead to a minor penalty.
Delay of Game
Infraction for causing a stoppage in play through actions such as shooting the puck out of play from the defensive zone or deliberately displacing the goalposts.
Charging
A penalty that occurs when a player takes more than three strides before checking their opponent, or leaves their feet to check an opponent.
Roughing
Called for engaging in fisticuffs or shoving that does not warrant a fighting major.
Spearing
When a player uses the blade of their stick to stab an opponent. Can result in a double-minor or major penalty.
Too Many Men on the Ice
A bench minor penalty called when a team has more players on the ice than they are permitted.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Penalized for actions that are disrespectful to the game, opponents, officials, or fans, such as arguing with an official or using profanity.
Misconduct
A serious penalty that leads to the player being sent off the ice for 10 minutes, though the team can substitute another player on the ice.
Game Misconduct
A severe penalty that results in the player being ejected from the game and they may face further suspension.
Match Penalty
The most severe penalty, for intent to injure; offender is ejected, and the team is penalized with a player short for five minutes with no substitution.
Butt-ending
When a player jabs an opponent with the top end of the stick. Can lead to a major penalty or a game misconduct.
Checking from Behind
A penalty incurred when a player body checks an opponent from behind. Can lead to a minor, major, or game misconduct penalty.
