Cradling
The act of keeping the ball in the stick's pocket when running.
Fast Break
A transition opportunity where the offense outnumbers the defense, usually leading to a scoring chance.
Slashing
A penalty where a player hits an opponent with their stick illegally. Consequences include a personal foul and time in the penalty box.
Warding Off
An offensive foul where a player uses their free hand or arm to push off a defender, resulting in a loss of possession.
Offsides
A violation where a team does not have the required number of players on each side of the field, resulting in a turnover or a time-serving penalty.
Cross-checking
An illegal check where a player uses the shaft of the stick to hit an opponent. Consequences include a personal or major foul and time in the penalty box.
Face-off
A technique used to start or resume play where two players fight for control of the ball.
Man-up
A situation where one team has a temporary numerical advantage due to a penalty on the opposing team.
Checking
Using the stick to dislodge the ball from an opponent's stick or to block their movement.
Quick Stick
When a player catches a pass and shoots the ball toward the goal in one swift motion without cradling.
Illegal Body Check
Occurs when contact is made with an opponent in an illegal manner, such as from behind, leading to a time-serving penalty.
Crease Violation
Occurs when an offensive player illegally enters the circular area surrounding the goal, resulting in a turnover.
Tripping
A penalty that occurs when a player obstructs an opponent at or below the knees, leading to time in the penalty box.
Non-releasable Penalty
A type of penalty where the offending player must serve the entire time in the penalty box, regardless of any goals scored.
Interference
Hindering an opponent who is not in possession of the ball, which results in a time-serving penalty.
Holding
A penalty where a player impedes an opponent's movement by using the stick or body. Consequences can include penalties and time in the box.
10-Second Rule
A rule that requires a team to advance the ball from their defensive half to the offensive half within 10 seconds, failure to do so results in a turnover.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Behavior contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship, leading to time-serving penalties or even ejection.
Box Lacrosse
A version of lacrosse played indoors in a hockey rink with boards where teams consist of six players each.
Rake
A technique where a player uses the back of their stick to pull the ball towards them, often during a face-off.
