Bunting
A technique where the batter lightly taps the ball without swinging in order to strategically place the ball in the infield, making it difficult to field.
Hitting Behind the Runner
A strategic approach where the batter aims to hit the ball to the opposite side of the field to move the base runner to the next base, often utilized when a runner is on first or second base.
Opposite Field Hitting
This technique encourages hitting the ball to the opposite side of the field from the hitter's dominant side, which is useful in certain strategic situations.
Slap Hitting
A technique used primarily in softball, where the batter takes a partial swing while moving towards first base to hit the ball softly and use their speed to reach base.
The Swing-away
A traditional full swing technique aiming to hit the ball as hard and as far as possible, often with the intention to drive in runs or hit a home run.
The Line Drive
A technique aiming to hit the ball straight into the outfield at a level trajectory, which can be a safe and effective method of getting on base.
Pull Hitting
A hitting style where the batter hits the ball to the same side of the field as their dominant hand, typically aiming for the shorter distance to the outfield.
The Foul Tip
A slight contact with the ball causing it to go sharply and directly to the catcher's hands and is legally considered a strike, often unintentional from the batter's perspective.
The Squeeze Play
A play where the batter bunts to allow a runner from third base to score, requiring precise timing between the batter and the base runner.
The Check Swing
A hesitant batting technique where the batter starts to swing but stops, trying to avoid a strike, often leading to debate over whether the swing was actually attempted.
