Field Dimensions
A standard field hockey pitch is 91.4m long and 55m wide.
Scoring a Goal
A goal is scored when the ball is successfully hit into the opponent's goal from within the shooting circle.
Game Duration
A traditional field hockey game is 70 minutes long, divided into two halves of 35 minutes each, with a 5-10 minute half-time break.
Number of Players
Each team has 11 players on the field: 10 field players and 1 goalkeeper.
Starting the Game
The game begins with a pass back from the center of the field after the umpire's whistle blow.
Free Hits
Awarded for fouls outside the shooting circle, the ball must be played from the ground and not be dangerous.
Penalty Corner
Awarded for offenses by a defender in their own shooting circle, the offense allows attackers a chance to shoot at goal.
Penalty Stroke
A one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper from a 6.4m distance, awarded for a foul denying a likely goal.
Stick Interference
It is illegal to use the stick to impede, hook, hold or interfere with an opponent's stick.
Obstruction
A player cannot obstruct an opponent from playing the ball, by either body or stick.
Foot Foul
The ball cannot be played with the foot or leg intentionally, doing so results in a free hit for the opposing team.
High Ball
The ball cannot be played dangerously or in a way that might lead to dangerous play when raised above knee height.
Advantage Rule
The umpire may play advantage if a foul has been committed but the non-offending team would benefit from play continuing.
Substitutions
Unlimited on-the-fly substitutions are allowed, except for the goalkeeper, who can only be substituted with a break in the game.
Backstick
Playing the ball with the rounded side of the stick is not allowed and results in a foul.
Aerial Balls
Players can send the ball into the air with a scoop or flick, but must not be dangerous or lead to dangerous play.
Umpire Signals
Umpires use specific hand and arm signals to indicate various fouls, starts, stops, and directions.
Third Party Obstruction
Occurs when a player without the ball interferes with an opponent's ability to play against a teammate.
Two-Minute Suspension
A temporary punishment for a player committing a deliberate foul or misconduct, who must leave the field for two minutes.
Long Corner
Awarded to the attacking team when the ball goes over the back line off a defender, taken from the 23-meter line.
