Starting Play

StarStarStarStar

Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ('pulls') the disc to the offense.

StarStarStarStar

Movement of the Disc

StarStarStarStar

The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc.

StarStarStarStar

Scoring

StarStarStarStar

A point is scored when the offense receives a pass in the defense's endzone.

StarStarStarStar

The Marker

StarStarStarStar

The defensive player guarding the person with the disc has a 10-second count (the stall) to force the disc holder to throw the disc.

StarStarStarStar

Self-Refereeing

StarStarStarStar

Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

StarStarStarStar

Endzone

StarStarStarStar

The area at either end of the field where points are scored, similar to the endzone in American football.

StarStarStarStar

The Stack

StarStarStarStar

An offensive strategy where players line up in a vertical line down the field to create space for cutters to receive the disc.

StarStarStarStar

The Pull

StarStarStarStar

The game starts by throwing the disc from one team to the other. This initial throw is known as 'the pull,' and is similar to a kickoff in football or throw-off in handball.

StarStarStarStar

The Force

StarStarStarStar

Defensive strategy to limit the angles at which the thrower can initiate play by standing on one specific side.

StarStarStarStar

The Field

StarStarStarStar

A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with endzones 25 yards deep.

StarStarStarStar

Fouls

StarStarStarStar

A foul is the result of physical contact between players. Play stops and possession goes back to the team that was fouled.

StarStarStarStar

Spirit of the Game

StarStarStarStar

Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged but never at the expense of respect among competitors.

StarStarStarStar

Turnover

StarStarStarStar

When the offense fails to catch a pass in the endzone, drops the disc, throws an incomplete pass, or violates certain rules, the defense takes possession.

StarStarStarStar

Change of Possession

StarStarStarStar

When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

StarStarStarStar

Out of Bounds

StarStarStarStar

The disc is out of bounds when it lands out of the field borders, hits an object out of bounds, or is caught by a player who is out of bounds or leaps from outside the field. The opposing team takes possession.

StarStarStarStar

Substitutions

StarStarStarStar

Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a point is scored or for injury.

StarStarStarStar

Stall Count

StarStarStarStar

When defending the person with the disc, the defender counts to ten out loud. If the disc is not thrown before the count reaches ten, it is a turnover.

StarStarStarStar

Hammers and Scoobers

StarStarStarStar

Types of overhead throws used in Ultimate Frisbee to pass over defenders.

StarStarStarStar

Traveling

StarStarStarStar

Moving with the disc without establishing a pivot foot, which results in a turnover.

StarStarStarStar

Non-contact

StarStarStarStar

No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
