Active Listening
The process of listening attentively while someone else speaks, paraphrasing and reflecting back what is said, and withholding judgment and advice. Most effective when both parties want to understand each other's perspective.
Win-Win Solution (Integrative Negotiation)
A conflict resolution strategy that aims to find a solution that satisfies the needs of all parties involved. Most effective when parties are willing to cooperate and there is a possibility for a mutually beneficial outcome.
Compromise
A strategy where each party gives up something that they want in order to reach an agreement. Most effective when time is limited and a quick solution is needed that satisfies all parties to some extent.
Avoidance
A conflict resolution strategy where someone does not address the conflict, distancing themselves from it instead. Most effective when the issue is trivial or when there is no chance of winning.
Accommodation
A strategy whereby one party gives in to the wishes or demands of another. Most effective when the issue is more important to the other party and maintaining peace is a priority.
Collaboration
A strategy where parties come together to find a solution that fully satisfies the concerns of all. Most effective when there is a high level of trust and parties are open to discussing their underlying concerns.
Competing
A strategy where one party seeks to win the conflict at the expense of others. Most effective in a zero-sum situation or when quick, decisive action is needed.
Mediation
A conflict resolution process in which a neutral third party assists the conflicting parties in reaching a voluntary, negotiated resolution. Most effective when parties are unable to resolve the conflict on their own but are willing to communicate through a mediator.
