Folkways
Folkways are informal social norms that suggest customary ways of behaving. For example, dressing appropriately for an occasion is considered a folkway.
Mores
Mores are norms that embody the moral views and principles of a group. Violating these can result in serious social condemnation. For example, honesty is a more in many societies.
Taboos
Taboos are strong social prohibitions against behaviors or discussions that are considered harmful or offensive. An example is cannibalism in most cultures.
Laws
Laws are formal norms that have been codified and are enforced by the state. For instance, traffic laws dictate how one must behave on the road.
Enacted Norms
Enacted norms are social norms people have agreed upon and are aware of. A common example is queuing in a line when waiting to purchase items.
Symbolic Norms
Symbolic norms involve the appropriate use of status symbols or objects that convey a certain social position. An example could be wearing a wedding ring to indicate marital status.
