Social Identity Theory
A psychological framework positing that part of an individual’s self-concept is derived from perceived membership in social groups.
In-Group
A social group to which an individual feels they belong, often leading to positive emotions and bias toward this group.
Out-Group
A social group with which an individual does not identify, often leading to negative attitudes or competition towards this group.
Social Categorization
The cognitive process of classifying people into groups based on shared characteristics.
Social Identification
The process by which individuals adopt the identity and characteristics of the group they perceive themselves as belonging to.
Social Comparison
The process of comparing one's group with other groups, which can enhance self-esteem if one's group is perceived favorably.
Positive Distinctiveness
The motivation for an in-group to be perceived as different from and better than out-groups in some respect.
In-Group Favoritism
The tendency to give preferential treatment and express more positive attitudes toward individuals from our own in-group.
Out-Group Derogation
The phenomenon where an out-group is perceived as being threatening to the in-group’s status, leading to discrimination against the out-group.
Ethnocentrism
The belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture, often accompanied by a feeling of contempt for other groups.
