Toxoid Vaccines
Use a toxin made by the germ that causes a disease. They create immunity to the parts of the germ that cause disease instead of the germ itself. An example is the DTaP vaccine that includes diphtheria and tetanus toxoids.
mRNA Vaccines
Use a messenger RNA molecule to teach our cells how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response. Examples include COVID-19 vaccines such as those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
Inactivated Vaccines
Use the killed version of the germ that causes a disease. Examples include polio (IPV), hepatitis A, and rabies vaccines.
Subunit, Recombinant, Polysaccharide, and Conjugate Vaccines
Use specific pieces of the germ — like its protein, sugar, or capsid. Examples are HPV (Human Papillomavirus), whooping cough (part of DTaP combined vaccine), and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) vaccines.
Live Attenuated Vaccines
Use a weakened form of the germ that causes a disease. Examples include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella (chickenpox), and nasal flu (influenza) vaccines.
