Flashcards
0/7
Lifestyle Modifications
Lifestyle changes such as reducing fluid intake before bedtime, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and regular exercise can help manage mild BPH symptoms.
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
TURP surgically removes part of the prostate that is blocking urine flow, which can significantly improve symptoms.
Minimally Invasive Therapies
Methods such as Urolift or Rezūm use mechanical implants or water vapor therapy to reduce prostate obstruction and improve symptoms with fewer side effects than surgery.
Tadalafil (Cialis)
Tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, can help relieve urinary symptoms of BPH as well as erectile dysfunction.
Laser Therapies
Laser therapies use high-energy lasers to remove prostate tissue and improve urine flow, often with a shorter catheterization time and a quicker recovery than TURP.
Alpha Blockers
Alpha blockers such as tamsulosin relax the smooth muscles of the bladder neck and prostate, improving urine flow and relieving symptoms of BPH.
5-alpha Reductase Inhibitors
5-alpha reductase inhibitors like finasteride and dutasteride decrease the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to shrinkage of the prostate gland over time.
