Interstitial Cystitis
Symptoms: Pelvic pain, pressure or discomfort, painful urination. Causes: Unknown, but may be associated with other health conditions. Treatments: Medication, physical therapy, bladder instillations.
Erectile Dysfunction
Symptoms: Trouble getting or keeping an erection, reduced sexual desire. Causes: Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use. Treatments: Oral medications, vacuum erection devices, surgery, and psychological counseling.
Prostate Cancer
Symptoms: Difficulty with urination, decreased force in the stream of urine. Causes: Mutations in the DNA of prostate cells. Treatments: Active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy.
Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
Symptoms: Urinary tract infections, bedwetting, high blood pressure. Causes: Dysfunctional valve where the ureter enters the bladder, often congenital. Treatments: Antibiotics to prevent infections, surgery to correct valve.
Kidney Stones
Symptoms: Severe pain in the side and back, painful urination. Causes: Crystal-forming substances in the urine. Treatments: Pain relievers, drinking water, medical procedures like lithotripsy.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Symptoms: Burning sensation when urinating, frequent urination, cloudy urine. Causes: Mostly caused by bacteria. Treatments: Antibiotics, drinking plenty of fluids, sometimes pain relievers.
Urinary Incontinence
Symptoms: Involuntary leakage of urine, sudden urge to urinate, bed-wetting. Causes: Aging bladder muscles, prostate conditions, neurological disorders. Treatments: Bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, medications, surgery.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Symptoms: Difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream, frequent or urgent need to urinate. Causes: Prostate gland enlargement with age. Treatments: Medication, minimally invasive therapies, surgery.
Hydronephrosis
Symptoms: Pain in the side and back, swollen kidney, nausea, fever. Causes: Blockage of the urinary tract, kidney stones, tumors. Treatments: Addressing the underlying cause, stent placement, nephrostomy, surgery.
Testicular Cancer
Symptoms: Lump on the testicle, ache in the abdomen or groin, collection of fluid in the scrotum. Causes: Unknown, but factors include undescended testicle, abnormal testicle development, family history. Treatments: Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy.
Prostatitis
Symptoms: Pain in the groin, painful urination, difficulty urinating. Causes: Bacterial infection, nerve damage in the lower urinary tract. Treatments: Antibiotics (for bacterial), alpha blockers, anti-inflammatory agents.
Peyronie’s Disease
Symptoms: Pain during erections, bent or curved erection, hard lumps on one side of the penis. Causes: Scar tissue called plaque, injury to the penis. Treatments: Medications, shock wave therapy, surgery.
Bladder Cancer
Symptoms: Blood in urine, frequent urination, pain during urination. Causes: Smoking, exposure to chemicals, chronic bladder inflammation. Treatments: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy.
Urethral Stricture
Symptoms: Decreased urine stream, straining to urinate, a spray of urine. Causes: Scar tissue from injury, infection, previous surgery. Treatments: Urethral dilation, urethrotomy, urethroplasty.
Overactive Bladder
Symptoms: Urgent need to urinate, frequent urination, nocturia. Causes: Neurological disorders, diabetes, medications. Treatments: Bladder training, medications, nerve stimulation.
