Functional Incontinence
Occurs when physical disability, external obstacles, or cognitive impairments prevent someone from reaching the bathroom in time. Management focuses on addressing the underlying causes, safety modifications, and consistent toileting schedules.
Mixed Incontinence
A combination of stress and urge incontinence symptoms. Treatment often involves a combination of therapies, including those for both stress and urge incontinence like pelvic floor exercises, bladder training, and medications.
Overflow Incontinence
Inability to empty the bladder completely, leading to frequent or constant dribbling of urine. Treatment options include catheterization, medication to improve bladder contractility, and surgery if there is an obstructive cause.
Stress Incontinence
Leakage of urine during physical activity that increases abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, or exercising. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises (Kegels), surgery such as a sling procedure, and managing contributing factors.
Urge Incontinence
A sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine. Treatment may involve bladder training techniques, anticholinergic medications, and potentially Botox injections into the bladder wall.
Total Incontinence
Continuous leakage or a periodic uncontrollable leakage of urine due to an anatomical or complete urinary system failure. Treatment could include surgery, catheters or collecting devices, and absorbent products for management.
