Flashcards
0/20
Spleen
Filters and stores blood to protect the body from infections and blood loss.
Bone Marrow
Generates new blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Skin
Protects the body from external factors such as bacteria, chemicals, and temperature. Skin is also involved in regulating body temperature and contains the nerve receptors that allow you to sense touch, pain, and pressure.
Thyroid Gland
Produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance.
Ovaries
Produce and release eggs (ova) for fertilization and produce the reproductive hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Pancreas
Produces digestive enzymes to break down food in the small intestine and hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels.
Appendix
Historically thought to have no function, but now believed to play a role in housing beneficial gut bacteria.
Gallbladder
Stores and concentrates bile, a digestive enzyme produced by the liver, and releases it into the small intestine to help break down fats.
Kidneys
Remove waste products and excess fluid from the body through urine production. They also help regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and red blood cell production.
Large Intestine
Absorbs water and electrolytes from food remnants and forms, stores, and expels feces.
Lungs
Responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood.
Liver
Processes nutrients absorbed from the small intestine, detoxifies harmful substances, metabolizes drugs, and produces blood clotting proteins and bile.
Heart
Pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.
Brain
Controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating, and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs, and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body.
Small Intestine
Absorbs nutrients and minerals from food.
Esophagus
Carries food, liquids, and saliva from the mouth to the stomach.
Testes
Produce sperm and secrete hormones, primarily testosterone.
Stomach
Secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. The stomach muscles contract periodically, churning food to enhance digestion.
Bladder
Stores urine, allowing for urination to be infrequent and controlled.
Adrenal Glands
Produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, and other essential functions.
