Urinary Bladder
Function: store urine until expulsion. Location: pelvic cavity, posterior to the pubic bone
Kidneys
Function: filter blood to remove waste and excess substances, producing urine. Location: retroperitoneal space in the abdomen, one on each side of the spine
Ureters
Function: transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Location: descend from the renal pelvis of the kidney to the bladder, one on each side
Renal Medulla
Function: contains the nephron structures that facilitate the concentration of urine. Location: inner portion of the kidney, beneath the cortex
Renal Pelvis
Function: funnel for urine flowing to the ureter. Location: central part of the kidney, where the renal calyces join together
Renal Cortex
Function: contains nephrons where filtration of blood occurs. Location: outer portion of the kidneys
Urethra
Function: conducts urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. Location: extends from the bladder to the external urethral orifice
Nephrons
Function: the functional units of the kidney, perform the filtration and purification of blood. Location: distributed throughout the renal cortex and medulla
Glomerulus
Function: network of capillaries that performs the first step of filtering blood. Location: within the nephrons in the renal cortex of each kidney
Renal Tubule
Function: a duct through which filtered fluid passes, where reabsorption and secretion occur, refining the filtrate into urine. Location: stretches from Bowman's capsule to the collecting ducts in the kidney
