Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Feelings of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area, urinary incontinence, and discomfort during sex; caused by weakening of muscles and tissues supporting pelvic organs; non-surgical treatments include pelvic floor exercises, while surgical options are also available.
Preeclampsia
High blood pressure, swelling of hands and feet, and protein in urine; cause is not well understood but risk factors include autoimmune disorders and first pregnancies; managed with blood pressure medication and careful monitoring, with delivery as the ultimate treatment.
Vulvodynia
Chronic vulvar pain, burning, or discomfort; no clear cause identified; treatments include medications, biofeedback, and physical therapy.
Interstitial Cystitis
Bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain; exact cause is uncertain but may relate to a defect in the protective lining of the bladder; treatments include oral medications, bladder instillations, and diet alterations.
Asherman's Syndrome
Menstrual disturbances, infertility, and recurrent miscarriage; caused by scar tissue within the uterus; treatment is primarily surgical, with hysteroscopy to remove adhesions.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, painful urination, and fever; typically caused by a bacterial infection; treated with antibiotics, and partners may also need treatment.
Cervical Cancer
Vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge, pain during sex; primarily caused by persistent HPV infection; treatment includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
Vaginitis
Vaginal itching or irritation, abnormal discharge, and a burning sensation while urinating; can be caused by infections or hormonal changes; treated with antibiotics, antifungal medications, or estrogen therapy.
Ovarian Cysts
Pelvic pain, bloating, and painful intercourse; typically fluid-filled sacs within or on the surface of an ovary; many resolve on their own, but larger cysts may require surgery.
Menorrhagia
Excessive menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, and anemia; may be due to hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, or polyps; treatments include iron supplements, birth control, and surgical procedures.
Uterine Fibroids
Heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pressure or pain, and frequent urination; usually benign growths in the uterus; treatment can range from medications to surgery such as a myomectomy or hysterectomy.
Lichen Sclerosus
White patches on the skin of the vulva, severe itching, and painful sex; cause is unknown but may be related to an immune system response; treated with steroid creams or, less commonly, surgery.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, and headaches; cause is unknown but linked to hormonal changes; treatments include lifestyle changes, diuretics, and pain relievers.
Amenorrhea
Absence of menstruation, which can be primary or secondary; factors include eating disorders, excessive exercise, and hormonal imbalances; treatments vary depending on the underlying cause.
Adenomyosis
Heavy periods, severe menstrual cramps, and an enlarged uterus; occurs when endometrial tissue grows into the uterine muscle; treatment may include anti-inflammatory drugs, hormone therapy, or hysterectomy.
Premature Ovarian Failure
Irregular or absent periods, infertility, and menopause symptoms; caused by the early depletion of ovarian follicles; treatments may involve hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and fertility interventions.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, and obesity; commonly due to hormonal imbalances; treatments include hormonal birth control, metformin, and lifestyle changes.
Endometriosis
Painful periods, chronic lower abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, and infertility; often caused by growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus; treatments include pain relievers, hormone therapy, and surgery.
Cervical Dysplasia
Abnormal changes in the cells on the surface of the cervix; often asymptomatic; caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection; treatment options vary from watchful waiting to surgical procedures.
Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD)
Abnormal growth of cells inside a woman's uterus following conception; symptoms include abnormal or severe bleeding, high levels of hCG, and quick uterus enlargement; treatments range from evacuation of uterine contents to chemotherapy, depending on the type.
