Flashcards
0/15
Sialolithiasis (Salivary Stones)
Symptoms: Pain and swelling in the affected gland, usually during meals. Causes: Dehydration, reduced saliva flow, or mineral deposits. Treatment: Hydration, massaging the gland, sour candies to stimulate saliva, or surgery if stones are large.
Salivary Gland Tumors
Symptoms: Lump in the mouth or face, pain, or muscle weakness. Causes: Unclear, but risk factors include radiation exposure and smoking. Treatment: Surgery, radiation therapy, and possibly chemotherapy.
Salivary Gland Fistula
Symptoms: Leakage of saliva from a small opening on the face or neck. Causes: Trauma, surgical complications. Treatment: Conservative management, or surgical closure of the fistula.
Sialadenosis (Sialosis)
Symptoms: Bilateral swelling of salivary glands, usually the parotid, without pain. Causes: Non-inflammatory, often associated with systemic diseases like diabetes or alcoholism. Treatment: Address underlying cause, supportive care.
Salivary Gland Aplasia
Symptoms: Missing or underdeveloped salivary glands, dry mouth. Causes: Congenital. Treatment: Artificial saliva, good oral hygiene, and regular dental check-ups to manage symptoms.
Necrotizing Sialometaplasia
Symptoms: Painful ulcer or swelling in the mouth. Causes: Ischemia of salivary glands. Treatment: Generally self-healing; symptomatic treatment with pain management and possibly antibiotics.
Salivary Gland Hypofunction (Xerostomia)
Symptoms: Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing and speaking, altered taste. Causes: Dehydration, medications, radiation therapy, Sjögren's syndrome. Treatment: Increased fluid intake, saliva substitutes, sugar-free gums or candies.
Salivary Gland Infection
Symptoms: Pain, redness, fever, and pus from the duct. Causes: Bacterial or viral infection. Treatment: Antibiotics for bacterial infections, warm compresses, and hydration.
Frey's Syndrome
Symptoms: Sweating and flushing of facial skin during eating. Causes: Damage to the parasympathetic nerves of the parotid gland, often after surgery. Treatment: Antiperspirants, botox injections or surgery.
Salivary Duct Cysts (Sialocele)
Symptoms: Fluid-filled swelling in the mouth. Causes: Blockage of the salivary ducts. Treatment: May resolve spontaneously, surgical removal if persistent or symptomatic.
Salivary Duct Stricture
Symptoms: Recurrent gland swelling, especially during meals. Causes: Scar tissue formation after injury or inflammation. Treatment: Dilation of the duct, stent placement, or surgery.
Sjögren's Syndrome
Symptoms: Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, dental cavities. Causes: Autoimmune disorder. Treatment: Artificial saliva, good oral hygiene, medications like pilocarpine or cevimeline, and regular dental check-ups.
Mucocele
Symptoms: Soft, bluish cysts in the mouth. Causes: Rupture of a salivary gland duct. Treatment: Often self-resolving, but may require surgical removal if persistent or large.
Radiation Sialadenitis
Symptoms: Dry mouth, loss of taste, mucositis. Causes: Radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. Treatment: Supportive care, saliva substitutes, and possibly pilocarpine to stimulate saliva production.
Sialorrhea (Hypersalivation)
Symptoms: Excessive saliva production, drooling. Causes: Neurological conditions, medications, gastroesophageal reflux. Treatment: Oral atropine, botox injections, or surgery in severe cases.
