Greek Revival
Features tall columns and pediments, painted plaster exteriors, horizontal transoms above doors and a symmetry in the design. Materials used include stucco, stone, and timber. Examples: The Parthenon in Athens, Greece and the U.S. Capitol building.
Romanesque
Characterized by semi-circular arches, large towers, and thick walls. Materials used are stone, brick, and concrete. Examples: Speyer Cathedral in Germany and the Basilica of Saint Ambrose in Milan.
Gothic
Known for pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses. It uses mainly stone and glass for its construction. Examples: Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.
Egyptian Revival
Includes massive columns resembling bundles of reeds or the lotus plant, use of hieroglyphic and pictorial motifs, and pyramid-shaped forms. The Karnak Temple in Luxor and the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas are examples.
Baroque
Featuring grandiose, detailed ornamentation, dramatic use of light, and a sense of movement within the structure. Materials used are stone, stucco, and marble. Examples: St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Versailles Palace in France.
Renaissance
Characterized by symmetry, proportion, and geometry derived from the study of classical Roman architecture. Use of columns, pilasters, and hemispherical domes. Examples: Florence Cathedral in Italy and Château de Chambord in France.
Byzantine
Identifiable by domes with pendetives, rich mosaics, and large square buildings. Brick and mortar were the primary materials. Examples: Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and San Vitale in Ravenna.
Islamic
Features arabesque designs, minarets, domes, and courtyards. Materials used include tiles, bricks, and stucco. Examples: The Alhambra in Spain and the Taj Mahal in India.
Mesoamerican
Notable for stepped pyramids, ballcourts, and alignment with astronomical events. Primarily using stone, examples include Chichen Itza in Mexico and the Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque.
Indus Valley
Characterized by urban planning, including grid layouts, advanced drainage systems, and brick constructions. Major sites are Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan and Harappa in India.
