PVC
Premature Ventricular Contractions, extra heartbeats that begin in one of your heart's two lower pumping chambers (ventricles).
HSCT
Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, a procedure that restores blood-forming stem cells in people who have had theirs destroyed by the very high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy that are used to treat some cancers.
PAD
Peripheral Artery Disease, a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs.
CAD
Coronary Artery Disease, a disease caused by the narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque buildup.
MI
Myocardial Infarction, commonly known as a heart attack; occurs when blood flow decreases or stops to a part of the heart.
EF
Ejection Fraction, a measurement of the percentage of blood leaving your heart each time it contracts.
STEMI
ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a severe heart attack caused by the complete blockage of a heart artery.
NSTEMI
Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a type of heart attack that does not cause significant changes on an ECG.
CPR
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, an emergency procedure to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.
AV
Atrioventricular Node, a part of the electrical conduction system of the heart that coordinates the top of the heart.
DVT
Deep Vein Thrombosis, a blood clot in a deep vein, typically in the leg.
AFib
Atrial Fibrillation, an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots in the heart.
CABG
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, a surgery to improve blood flow to the heart.
CHF
Congestive Heart Failure, a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate.
ACE
Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme, an enzyme that helps regulate blood pressure.
VT
Ventricular Tachycardia, a type of fast heart rate that originates from the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles).
SA
Sinoatrial Node, the natural pacemaker of the heart that helps control the heart rhythm.
ECG
Electrocardiogram, a test to measure the electrical activity of the heart.
BP
Blood Pressure, the pressure of circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels.
ICD
Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator, a battery-powered device placed under the skin that keeps track of your heart rate and can use electrical pulses to correct irregular heart rhythms.
HDL
High-Density Lipoprotein, a type of cholesterol known as 'good' cholesterol.
VTE
Venous Thromboembolism, a condition that includes both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
LDL
Low-Density Lipoprotein, a type of cholesterol known as 'bad' cholesterol.
BBB
Bundle Branch Block, a condition in which there's a delay or blockage along the pathway that electrical impulses travel to make your heart beat.
LVAD
Left Ventricular Assist Device, a mechanical pump that is used to support heart function and blood flow in people with weakened hearts.
