Flashcards
0/15
Cardiac Sarcoidosis
Causes: Unknown, possibly genetic or environmental factors. Symptoms: Arrhythmias, heart block, sudden cardiac death. Treatments: Corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, device implantation (pacemaker or defibrillator).
Myocarditis
Causes: Viral infections, autoimmune diseases, toxins. Symptoms: Chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue. Treatments: Medication (e.g., NSAIDs, corticosteroids), managing symptoms, avoiding alcohol and exercise during recovery.
Rheumatic Heart Disease
Causes: Complication of untreated strep throat, rheumatic fever. Symptoms: Heart murmur, chest discomfort, shortness of breath. Treatments: Long-term antibiotics, anti-inflammatory treatment, valve repair or replacement surgery.
Lyme Carditis
Causes: Borrelia burgdorferi bacterial infection (Lyme disease). Symptoms: Heart block, myocarditis, shortness of breath. Treatments: Antibiotics, temporary pacing for heart block, anti-inflammatory medications.
Pericarditis
Causes: Viral infections, systemic inflammatory disorders, heart surgery. Symptoms: Sharp chest pain, pericardial friction rub, fever. Treatments: Anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine, corticosteroids, pericardiocentesis.
Dressler's Syndrome
Causes: Immune response to heart damage, typically after heart surgery or myocardial infarction. Symptoms: Fever, chest pain, pericardial effusion. Treatments: Anti-inflammatory medications, colchicine, corticosteroids.
Kawasaki Disease
Causes: Unknown, possibly infectious or environmental triggers. Symptoms: Fever, rash, swollen hands and feet. Treatments: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), aspirin, monitoring for coronary artery complications.
Chagas Disease (American Trypanosomiasis)
Causes: Parasitic infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. Symptoms: Heart rhythm abnormalities, dilated cardiomyopathy, sudden cardiac arrest. Treatments: Antiparasitic treatment (benznidazole or nifurtimox), symptomatic management, cardiac devices.
Takayasu's Arteritis
Causes: Unknown, likely autoimmune. Symptoms: Weakness, weight loss, blood pressure discrepancies. Treatments: High-dose steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, vascular interventions like stenting or bypass.
Endocarditis
Causes: Bacterial or fungal infection, use of contaminated needles. Symptoms: Fever, heart murmur, petechiae. Treatments: Long-term antibiotic or antifungal therapy, surgery to repair damaged valves.
Giant Cell Myocarditis
Causes: Often idiopathic, possibly autoimmune related. Symptoms: Rapidly progressive heart failure, ventricular arrhythmias, conduction system disease. Treatments: High-dose steroids, immunosuppressants, heart transplant in severe cases.
Libman-Sacks Endocarditis
Causes: Autoimmune association, typically with systemic lupus erythematosus. Symptoms: Valvular abnormalities, embolic events, fatigue. Treatments: Anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory medications, valve repair or replacement if necessary.
Cardiac Amyloidosis
Causes: Deposition of amyloid proteins (AL or ATTR types). Symptoms: Restrictive cardiomyopathy, heart failure, arrhythmias. Treatments: Chemotherapy for AL type, transthyretin stabilizers for ATTR type, heart transplant.
Eosinophilic Endomyocardial Disease
Causes: Hypereosinophilic syndrome, parasitic infections, drugs. Symptoms: Heart failure, thromboembolism, neuropathy. Treatments: Corticosteroids, anticoagulation, treatment of underlying cause.
Acute Rheumatic Fever
Causes: Immune response to Group A Streptococcus infection. Symptoms: Sydenham's chorea, migratory polyarthritis, fever. Treatments: Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, long-term prophylaxis to prevent recurrence.
