Flashcards
0/10
Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL)
Role in heart health: Known as 'bad' cholesterol; high levels can lead to plaque buildup in arteries, increasing heart disease risk. Normal values: Less than 100mg/dL is optimal for individuals without health issues.
Saturated Fats
Role in heart health: High intake of saturated fats can lead to increased LDL levels and risk of heart disease. Normal values: Should account for less than 10% of your total daily calories.
Triglycerides
Role in heart health: High levels can increase the risk of coronary artery disease, especially in women. Normal values: Less than 150mg/dL is considered normal.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Role in heart health: These polyunsaturated fats can help lower the risk of arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, and slow down plaque buildup. Normal values: No established normal ranges, but 250–500mg of EPA and DHA per day recommended for adults.
VLDL Cholesterol
Role in heart health: Very Low-Density Lipoprotein is another 'bad' cholesterol that contributes to plaque buildup. Normal values: Typically, 5-40mg/dL is considered normal.
Lipoprotein (a)
Role in heart health: A genetic variant of LDL, high levels can increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Normal values: Less than 30mg/dL is preferable.
Total Cholesterol
Role in heart health: Sum of LDL and HDL; high levels can increase the risk of heart disease. Normal values: Less than 200mg/dL is desirable.
Polyunsaturated Fats
Role in heart health: Can help reduce LDL cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke when used to replace saturated fats. Normal values: Should account for up to 10% of your daily calories.
Trans Fats
Role in heart health: Artificial trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils) can increase inflammation, LDL levels, and risk of heart disease. Normal values: Intake should be as low as possible.
High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
Role in heart health: Considered 'good' cholesterol; helps remove other forms of cholesterol from your bloodstream. Normal values: 60mg/dL or higher is considered protective against heart disease.
