Atrial Fibrillation
Definition: A heart rhythm disorder where the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly. Symptoms: Palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Blood thinners, beta-blockers, electrical cardioversion.
Heart Failure
Definition: A chronic condition where the heart doesn't pump blood as well as it should. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in legs and ankles. Common Treatments: Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, lifestyle modifications.
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Definition: A circulatory condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. Symptoms: Leg pain when walking, changes in skin color, sores. Common Treatments: Lifestyle changes, medications, angioplasty or surgery.
Congestive Heart Failure
Definition: A type of heart failure where fluid builds up around the heart and causes it to pump inefficiently. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, edema, fatigue. Common Treatments: Diuretics, heart transplant in severe cases.
Aortic Dissection
Definition: A serious condition in which the inner layer of the aorta tears and blood surges through the tear. Symptoms: Sudden severe chest or upper back pain, fainting, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Emergency surgery, blood pressure control.
Ventricular Septal Defect
Definition: A hole in the wall that separates the right and left ventricles of the heart. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, fatigue, delayed growth in children. Common Treatments: Monitoring, surgical repair.
Tachycardia
Definition: A faster than normal heart rate, typically over 100 beats per minute when at rest. Symptoms: Palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain. Common Treatments: Medications, ablation, pacemaker in some cases.
Rheumatic Heart Disease
Definition: A condition resulting from acute rheumatic fever, causing damage to heart valves. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations. Common Treatments: Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory treatment, valve repair or replacement.
Pulmonary Hypertension
Definition: High blood pressure in the arteries to the lungs, which can lead to right-sided heart failure. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue. Common Treatments: Vasodilators, diuretics, oxygen therapy, possibly lung transplantation.
Bradycardia
Definition: A slower than normal heart rate, typically under 60 beats per minute. Symptoms: Dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Pacemaker, managing underlying conditions.
Hypertensive Heart Disease
Definition: Heart conditions caused by high blood pressure including coronary artery disease, heart failure, and thickening of the heart muscle. Symptoms: Fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Blood pressure medications, lifestyle changes.
Myocarditis
Definition: Inflammation of the heart muscle, often due to a viral infection. Symptoms: Chest pain, fatigue, arrhythmias. Common Treatments: Managing symptoms, addressing the underlying cause, sometimes anti-inflammatory medications.
Tetralogy of Fallot
Definition: A congenital heart defect that consists of four abnormalities: a ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and an overriding aorta. Symptoms: Cyanosis, difficulty breathing, fainting. Common Treatments: Surgical repair.
Coronary Artery Disease
Definition: A disease characterized by the narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque buildup. Symptoms: Chest pain, shortness of breath, heart attack. Common Treatments: Lifestyle changes, medications, angioplasty/stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
Aortic Stenosis
Definition: A narrowing of the aortic valve opening, restricting blood flow from the heart into the aorta. Symptoms: Chest pain, fainting, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Valve replacement surgery, medications to manage symptoms.
Pericarditis
Definition: Inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart. Symptoms: Sharp chest pain, fever, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine, corticosteroids.
Hypercholesterolemia
Definition: A condition characterized by high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Symptoms: Typically asymptomatic, but can lead to other cardiac conditions. Common Treatments: Statins, lifestyle changes, possibly PCSK9 inhibitors.
Mitral Valve Prolapse
Definition: A condition in which the two valve flaps of the mitral valve do not close smoothly or evenly. Symptoms: Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain. Common Treatments: Regular monitoring, medications, valve repair or replacement in severe cases.
Long QT Syndrome
Definition: A heart rhythm disorder that can potentially lead to fast, chaotic heartbeats. Symptoms: Fainting, seizures during exercise or when startled, sudden cardiac arrest. Common Treatments: Beta-blockers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), lifestyle modifications.
Myocardial Infarction
Definition: Commonly known as a heart attack, this occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. Symptoms: Chest pain, sweating, nausea. Common Treatments: Aspirin, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
Endocarditis
Definition: Inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, often due to infection. Symptoms: Fever, heart murmur, blood clots. Common Treatments: Intravenous antibiotics, surgery to repair or replace damaged valves.
Coarctation of the Aorta
Definition: A congenital condition characterized by narrowing of the aorta. Symptoms: High blood pressure, headache, muscle weakness. Common Treatments: Balloon angioplasty, stent placement, surgery.
Cardiomyopathy
Definition: A group of diseases that affect the heart muscle and its ability to pump blood. Symptoms: Breathlessness, swelling of legs, fatigue. Common Treatments: Medications, lifestyle changes, implantable devices.
Marfan Syndrome
Definition: A genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissue, leading to cardiovascular issues like aortic aneurysm. Symptoms: Tall stature, long limbs, chest deformities. Common Treatments: Regular monitoring, beta-blockers, surgery for aortic complications.
Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy
Definition: A type of cardiomyopathy where heart muscle is replaced by fatty and fibrous tissue, leading to arrhythmias. Symptoms: Palpitations, syncope, sudden cardiac death. Common Treatments: Medications, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
Angina Pectoris
Definition: Chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscles. Symptoms: Chest discomfort, nausea, shortness of breath. Common Treatments: Nitroglycerin, beta-blockers, angioplasty.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Definition: A blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. Symptoms: Leg pain, swelling, redness. Common Treatments: Anticoagulants, compression stockings, thrombectomy in severe cases.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Definition: A disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, chest pain, arrhythmias. Common Treatments: Beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, myectomy or alcohol septal ablation in some cases.
Atrial Septal Defect
Definition: A birth defect that causes a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers. Symptoms: Fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations. Common Treatments: Catheter-based procedures, surgery, monitoring.
