Check the Scene and the Victim
Make sure the environment is safe for you and the victim. Checking ensures you do not become a victim yourself.
Check for Breathing
Look, listen, and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. Absence of breathing requires immediate action.
Deliver Rescue Breaths
If the victim is not breathing, give two rescue breaths. The breaths can deliver oxygen to the lungs.
Open the Airway
Tilt the victim's head back and lift the chin to open the airway. An open airway is essential for breathing.
Call for Help
Dial emergency services or direct someone else to do so. Quick response time can be critical for survival.
Start Chest Compressions
Place hands on the center of the chest and push hard and fast. Compressions circulate blood to vital organs.
Follow AED Prompts
The AED guides you through each step. Following its prompts ensures correct and effective use.
Continue CPR
Alternate 30 chest compressions with two rescue breaths. Continued CPR increases the chance of survival.
Minimize Interruptions
Limit pauses in chest compressions to increase the chance of survival. Consistent compressions sustain blood flow.
Check Pulse
Occasionally check for a pulse to determine if the heart is beating effectively. Absence of a pulse may mean CPR should continue.
Reassess Victim
Regularly check for signs of life and normal breathing. Recognition of changes can alter care steps.
Use of AED
If available, apply an Automated External Defibrillator as soon as possible. AED can restore a normal heart rhythm.
Handover to Professionals
When emergency services arrive, provide a clear handover. Accurate information is crucial for ongoing care.
Comfort and Reassure
If the patient becomes conscious, comfort them and keep them still. Preventing further injury and reducing anxiety is important.
Resume CPR after AED
After an AED shock, or if no shock is advised, resume CPR immediately. CPR maintains circulation after a shock.
